The “2023-2024 Spring Term Africa Lectures” series of Sakarya University’s Middle East Institute (ORMER) hosted this week a lecture titled “Migrations from Africa to the Global South” by anthropologist Prof. Mahir Şaul. The speaker started by discussing the notion of a “global south.” Then, he provided a brief outline of African mobility to the countries of the global south as opposed to the patterns of mobility that prevailed immediately following decolonization and the migrations to Western Europe and North America. Prof. Şaul argued that we could better understand the migration of Africans to Turkey since the 1990s by considering this global movement, newly developed manufacturing centers, and supply chains in the world, and he gave examples from his field studies. He shared a list of publications with his audience as examples of research on Africans’ migration and trade journeys to China and other countries. A question-and-answer session followed the lecture.
